COLOMBO (News 1st): Police Constable Ratnayake bearing the badge number 76013, attached to the Kobeigane Police who was killed in a hit and run on Saturday night (Nov. 28), has been promoted to the rank of Police Sergeant posthumously, Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana said on Monday (Nov. 30).

The late Police Constable Ratnayake was run over by a tipper truck on the 28th November in Hathalawa that comes under the purview of the Kobeigane police jurisdiction.

According to DIG Ajith Rohana, the late Police officer was a member of the team that was conducting investigations to apprehend suspects connected to illegal sand mining in the area.

“The late Police Constable Ratnayake bearing the badge number 76013 has sacrificed his life in order to protect our motherland, in order to protect the natural environment. Considering his valiant performances the Inspector General of Police has decided to promote him to the rank of Police Sergeant posthumously,” the Police Spokesperson said.

The 27-year-old individual who drove the tipper truck that cost the life of the late Police Constable was later arrested on Sunday (Nov. 29).
