Former speaker warns against media suppression

COLOMBO (News1st): Former speaker Karu Jayasuriya has criticized attempts to suppress individuals posting material critical of the government on social media. ''The dark forces that existed in the past, are reappearing. This is what disappoints us the most,'' the former parliament speaker said on Thursday. He warned the government that the international community is aware of the current situation in the country. “If one is attempting to govern this country, by suppressing and weakening the media, they will also be compelled to face the consequences,'' Jayasuriya stressed. He urged the government to implement a mechanism to deliver accurate information to the people.
