COLOMBO (News 1st): A tense situation arose at the Alawathugoda Public Cemetery in Akurana due to damages caused to the monuments of war heroes. Families of war heroes have complained that the Akurana Pradeshiya Sabha has demolished monuments of their loved ones at the Alawathugoda Public Cemetery. Our correspondent reported that sand that has been removed to make way for a water project in Kandy has been dumped at the public cemetery. The chairman of the Akurana Pradeshiya, Isthihar Imadudeen said that approval was granted to fill sand for development purposes at another section of the cemetery. He denied claims that the monuments of war heroes had been covered by mounds of earth and added that a monument that was damaged during the sand filling process, was repaired within an hour. ''We didn’t permit sand to be dumped here. It was to be done at the back of the cemetery. However, if a tomb has been buried in soil we will take steps to restore it.'' Chairman of the Akurana Pradeshiya Sabha said.
