COLOMBO (News1st): The country's best judges will be appointed to the Appeal Court in future, justice minister Ali Sabry has said. Speaking in Parliament on Monday, the minister accused the former government of filing baseless cases against the members of its preceding administration. "I have appeared on behalf of (current) President (Gotabaya Rajapaksa) for about 35 cases in a personal capacity," Sabry, a president's counsel,  said in a parliamentary debate. He added that cases were also filed against former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, his brother Chamal Rajapaksa, and son Namal Rajapaksa out of political vengeance. "If cases are filed against anyone in court based on political motives and without any facts, ultimately they will be released," the minister said. He made these remarks responding to claims that individuals charged with offences committed under Mahinda Rajapaksa's administration are being acquitted under the present government. "The recent verdicts have been issued by some judges appointed under the previous administration. They are independent judges," Sabry insisted.
