Colombo (News 1st); The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) commenced an investigation with regard to social media reports on people collapsing on the streets and dying.

Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana speaking to reporters on Friday (13) said there was only one incident of a person exposed to COVID-19 dying on the streets, adding the victim was a homeless person.

However, certain social media posts claim people are dropping dead on the streets as a result of COVID-19 and therefore, the CID launched a special investigation on these claims, said DIG Ajith Rohana.

The Police Spokesperson urged netizens to refrain from posting, sharing, and forwarding any post with false and fabricated information, posing a threat to National Security and bringing disrepute to the law enforcement agencies.

The CID will be recording statements from all those responsible for the circulation of such posts.

He said on an earlier occasion 17 people were arrested and prosecuted for a similar offense.
