14-day Quarantine to people who left Western Province; legal action upon return

Colombo (News 1st); A special operation is taking place locate people from the Western Province who fled to other areas ahead of the quarantine curfew which came into effect on Thursday (29).

Police Spokesperson DIG AJith Rohana speaking to News 1st said all police stations in Sri Lanka have been informed to check hotels, circuit bungalows, guest houses and other places of accommodation.

Local Police was instructed to gather information of all the occupants and if it is found the guests checked-in on 29th and 30th of October and are from the Western Province, the local Police OIC was ordered to take necessary action to place those guests in immediate quarantine for a 14 days at the place of accommodation.

Following the 14 day quarantine period the guests would be permitted to return to the Western Province, where charges will be filed against them as per the quarantine law.

Sri Lanka Police IT & Media Division is monitoring social media posts and comments claiming they dodged the quarantine order.

DIG Ajith Rohana said such individuals will be traced and prosecuted as per the provisions of the Quarantine and Prevention of Diseases Ordinance and other necessary legal provisions.

He said Sri Lanka Police observed individuals posting photos and videos of leaving the Western Province ahead of the quarantine curfew and bragging about evading the authorities.
