Welikada Prison Hospital to be converted into a treatment center

Colombo (News 1st); The Department of Prisons was instructed to prepare an emergency contingency plan to prevent COVID-19 from entering prisons, said State Minister of Prison Reforms & Prisoners' Rehabilitation Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle.

Further, the emergency contingency plan will include an operational guide on how to operate when a COVID-19 case is detected from inside a prison, she said.

Accordingly, the movement of all prisoners will be restricted while the transfer of prisoners from prisons will be suspended.

In addition, prisoners will not be allowed to be involved in external work assignments until further notice, and travel to the court will also be restricted.

Further, visitation and obtaining food from external sources was suspended with immediate effect until further notice.

The 180-bed Welikada Prison Hospital will be converted into a treatment center in the event of an emergency.

The State Ministry of Prison Reforms & Prisoners' Rehabilitation said the Angunukolapeless Prison Hospital and the Dumbara Prison Hospital would also be converted into treatment centers.
