Colombo (News 1st);  Sri Lanka's Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has requested the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader to nominate members of the new Parliamentary Council.

The Constitutional Council established via the 19th Amendment to the Constitution ceased to exist after the 20th Amendment to the Constitution became law, after the speaker assented to it on Thursday (29).

Accordingly, the Parliamentary Council will make nominations and observations with regard to the appointment to all independent commissions in Sri Lanka.

However, via the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, the President is vested with the power to disregard the said nominations and observations, as per his wishes.
