Colombo (News 1st); Health authorities have observed there is a high possibility of COVID-19 patients developing complications and the virus claiming lives, taking into account the recent spike of COVID-19 cases, said Acting Deputy Director-General of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath.

He said the situation would be serious when an older person, patient, or a person suffering from a disease contract the coronavirus.

"There is a possibility the Minuwangoda cluster can continue to remain for 6 or 8 weeks," he said.

There is a possibility that the spread of the virus from this cluster can aggravate rapidly at any time, warned Dr. Hemantha Herath.

Dr. Haritha Aluthge, the General Secretary of the Government Medical Officers Association said a serious situation has arisen in the country adding Sri Lanka is on the verge of entering the community stage of the virus.

He said Sri Lanka's main challenge at the moment is to prevent the virus from spreading among the community and warned the situation will become worse if the virus starts spreading among the community.
