Protest against land filling project in Boralesgamuwa

COLOMBO (News1st): A protest was staged in Raththanapitiya, Boralesgamuwa on Sunday against a project to fill low-lying land in the area. The protestors complained that officials had obtained their lands to build a drainage system and a water tank, in exchange for other lands to engage in farming. According to these protestors, their cultivation lands had been grazed as part of a project to fill-up a low-lying land. "If they could not inform us in person, they could have put up a board with the message," one protestor said during the demonstration. Some local politicians were also involved in the protest. "They (the people) should be compensated for their destroyed cultivations," Pradeep Nishantha Vedamulla, an urban councillor of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna said.
