Those who destroy forests will not be spared by law, warns Environment Minister

Colombo (News 1st); Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera said anyone responsible for destroying the environment would not be spared by the law, irrespective of their position and status.

The Government has given necessary instructions to make arrests with regard to the destruction caused to Wanathawilluwa, the Sri Lanka Cement Corporation property, and other important forest areas, he added.

"Those accountable for deforestation will be forced to reforest the areas they cleared," said Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera adding if necessary, new legislation would be passed to penalize those responsible for destroying forests in Sri Lanka.
