Fairly heavy falls exceeding 100 mm likely today: Met Department

COLOMBO (News 1st): Showery conditions over the island are expected to enhance today (Sep 06), the Department of Meteorology said. The Met Department predicts fairly heavy rainfalls exceeding 100 mm over the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Northwestern provinces and in Galle, Matara, Mannar, and Mullaitivu districts. Wind speed can increase up to 50-60 kmph at times across the island. The Met Department requested the general public to take precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning and localized strong winds during thundershowers. Meanwhile, the sun is going to be directly over the latitudes of Sri Lanka until Monday (Sep 07). The nearest towns of Sri Lanka over which the sun is overhead today (Sep 06) are Bentota, Meegama, Dodampapitiya, Pelawatta, Bodagama, and Kataragama.
