COLOMBO (News1st): Former president Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has said she would support the formation of a young generation to uplift the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). "This party that has a strong foundation and a noble vision, and has a proud history involving great personalities cannot be destroyed," Kumaratunga said as the party celebrated its 69th anniversary. The former SLFP leader refuted claims of joining the opposition United National Party (UNP), and insisted that she had only joined an alliance that included the UNP. "I joined the alliance and not the UNP because 49 other parties and groups including the SLFP had signed the agreement to join them," the former President said. She added that the SLFP would require sometime to rebuild itself. "I don't know whether I would be alive at that time. However, I will extend my support towards forming a young generation to support the upliftment of the party," Kumaratunga noted.
