19th Amendment to the Constitution must go, says State Minister

Colombo (News 1st); Sarath Weerasekera, the State Minister of Provincial Councils & Local Government said a report on whether the Provincial Councils actually benefit the country will be produced to the government in due course.

" There is a view in the society which terms the Provincial Councils as White Elephants," said the State Minister adding it is the responsibility of the Government if it decides to hold an election or not.

Commenting on the 19th Amendment to the Constitution on Sunday (30), the State Minister said 19A led the country towards anarchism and made the President powerless.

" I firmly believe the 19th Amendment to the Constitution should be abolished and a new constitution is required if the country should develop, " said State Minister Weerasekera.
