COLOMBO (News 1st): During the course of this year, 4484 complaints of child abuse cases in Sri Lanka were received so far, the National Child Protection Authority said on Sunday (Aug 30). A total of 8558 complaints on such incidents were received last year, according to Prof. Muditha Vidanapathirana, the NCPA Chairman. "Although there is a decrease in the number of cases reported compared to that of last year, the brutality of abuse has worsened," Prof. Muditha Vidanapathirana further noted. Prof. Vidanapathirana was of the view that harmful content present on the internet could be one of the reasons for the severe brutality of child abuse cases. A national program was underway to prevent the abuse of children, he said. Furthermore, the 1929 helpline for children was operational 24*7.
