COLOMBO (News 1st): A project named "LifeWorth - Save A Life" was launched in Colombo to raise awareness on beach safety in Sri Lanka.

The project was launched by Sri Lanka Life Saving and Rainbow Swimming Academy.

"...all of us must get together to find solutions when something is not happening in the way it should be," coast conservation state minister Dr Nalaka Godahewa said.

The launch was attended by several personalities representing diverse sectors in the country.

"Our job is to try and save lives but also let the public enjoy the beauty of our nation," Julian Bolling, a former national swimmer said.

Lack of water safety understanding, negligence, alcohol consumption and lack of safety equipment are the main reasons for drowning, according to latest reports by Sri Lanka Life Saving.

Sri Lanka Life Saving, the apex body in lifesaving in Sri Lanka demonstrated water safety techniques during the programme as part of creating awareness.

"we have brought together businessmen and social activists to create a safe environment in the waters for locals and foreigners," Asanka Nanayakkara, Sri Lanka Life Saving President said.
