COLOMBO (News1st): The government will abolish the 19th amendment as a precursor to a new constitution, minister Wimal Weerawansa has said.
Weerawansa told reporters that the cabinet had approved a proposal to appoint an expert committee to draft a new constitution.
He said that two-term limit for a President to contest for the post imposed through the 19th amendment would, however, be retained.
“We will repeal the provisions that are detrimental to the country,” the industries minister told reporters on Wednesday.
He added that a new constitution would be presented later.
