AG denies reports he approved MCC Compact Agreement

Colombo (News 1st);  Attorney General Dappula De Livera strongly denied media reports which claim he had approved the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact.

In a statement, Coordinating Officer to the Attorney General, State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne claimed such reports are completely false.

She said certain media and social media channels had reported on the matter based on a letter dated back in 2018 issued on behalf of the Attorney General.

The State Counsel said the present Attorney General maintains a position that no opinion was made with regard to the constitutional nature of the agreement as mentioned in the letter dated back in 2018.

She said the Attorney General had already called for observations from the necessary government stake-holders adding the AG would provide necessary advice on the legality of the said MCC agreement only after receiving and perusing the Final Report of the MCC review committee appointed by the President.

Coordinating Officer to the Attorney General, State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne stressed the matter is still under consideration.
