Colombo (News 1st); 54 Former Parliamentarians and 62 Local Government Members were expelled from the United National Party, as per a decision reached by the Working Committee, said UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam on Tuesday (28).
Speaking to reporters, Kariyawasam said of the 102 Members who obtained membership of the Samagi Jana Balavegaya to contest the polls, 54 were stripped of their party membership, as per a Working Committee decision.
He said the list of those who were expelled from the party would be directed to the National Elections Commission along with a list of replacements.
Akila Viraj Kariyawasam was not clear if SJB Leader Sajith Premadasa is among the 54 former parliamentarians who were expelled, adding the complete list would be announced on Wednesday (29).
However, he said the Chairman of the Weligama Urban Council was stripped of his party membership.
