03 Parliamentary Election candidates arrested for violation of election laws

Colombo (News 1st); Sri Lanka Police said it received complaints against 29 Election candidates for the violation of election laws.

Priyantha Weerasooriya, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (Elections) said three election candidates who violated election laws were arrested and they represent the Puttlam, Kurunegala, and Jaffna districts.

In addition, disciplinary action was instituted against 05 police for the violation of election laws while on active duty, and among them are the OIC of Polonnaruwa and Ja-Ela.

Priyantha Weerasooriya, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (Elections) went on to note a Police Officer from the Ministerial Security Division or MSD was interdicted and the other officers in question were given transfers.

Sri Lanka Police received a total of 207 complaints with regard to the 2020 General Election and 222 people were arrested.

Further, 64 vehicles were seized by law enforcement authorities.

Priyantha Weerasooriya, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (Elections) added 50 complaints of criminal conduct related to the elections were also received.
