Vehicle registrations rise amidst import suspension

COLOMBO (News1st): Vehicle registrations in June rose by 22.6 percent compared to the tally recorded in June last year, amidst a suspension of vehicle imports, a stock broker report has shown. According to the report, 32,123 vehicle registrations had been recorded in June compared to 26,201 registrations during the same month last year. The figures in June had doubled when compared to 17,313 registrations recorded in May amidst the coronavirus pandemic in the country. Motorcycles were the highest registered vehicles, with figures standing at 25,162, while the lowest were electric cars that saw only 3 registrations, the report showed. The importation of vehicles had been suspended along with several other products in March this year. However, the stock broker citing industry sources estimated that that there is around 1 month of inventory remaining and that the current momentum of registration is expected to continue into July.
