COLOMBO(News 1st): Although operations of trains have begun, there is a significant drop in passengers using trains, the Department of Railways stated.
This has reduced the daily income from the train services from 17 million rupees to 7 million rupees, General Manager of Railways, Dilantha Fernando said.
Due to the small number of passengers commuting by trains in the afternoon, the number of intercity trains has been reduced, He further added.
The daily number of trips undertaken by trains stands around 280 and the number of trips has now being reduced 240.
So far the majority of passengers using trains are office commuters and that trend appears to continue,
the General Manager further stated.
