Colombo (News 1st); Minister Wimal Weerawansa, representing the ruling faction said he would never be a party to a government that signs the MCC agreement.
“I will not remain a day in a government which would sign an agreement of this nature,” said Wimal Weerawansa.
He said the existing government would not pave the way for the legislature and the judiciary to be threatened.
Joint Cabinet Spokesperson Minister (Dr) Bandula Gunawardena said after the Interim Report of the MCC Review Committee was furnished to the President, it was decided the Government would not ink an agreement that violates the constitution and laws of the country.
He said after the Final Report of the MCC Review Committee was presented, the matter will be looked into and the general public will be made aware of all decisions made by the government.
Joint Cabinet Spokesperson Minister (Dr) Ramesh Pathirana echoed the same adding the MCC agreement will not be signed under any circumstance.
However, SLPP Candidate Keheliya Rambukwella who represents the ruling faction said the contents of any agreement, be it the MCC, are of importance.
He said there is no harm in analyzing the agreement if the contents can be amended and are not harmful to the country.
