8880 motor accidents so far in 2020; 106 CCTV Cameras monitor traffic in Colombo

Colombo (News 1st); Road accidents killed 921 people in Sri Lanka so far this year, as of Sunday the 14th of June.

SSP Indika Hapugoda the Director of Motor Traffic and Road Safety of Sri Lanka Police said high-speed, fatigue and reckless driving contribute to a majority of motor accidents reported in Sri Lanka.

According to Traffic Police data 8880, motor accidents were reported in the past 06 months of 2020 - 886 of them were dangerous motor accidents and 2273 were serious in nature.

In 2019 a total of 30,476 motor accidents were reported, claiming the lives of 2851 people.

SSP Indika Hapugoda said 08 Million vehicles were registered in 2019 with the Office of the Commissioner of Motor Traffic.

This included 4.6 Million Motor-Cycles and 1.1 Million Three-wheelers.

SSP Indika Hapugoda went on to note 106 CCTV cameras are in operation in Colombo in addition to the three Mobile CCTV Surveillance Vans which are deployed to monitor traffic.

He added, if a person commits a hit and run, CCTV footage will be used to track down the driver and institute legal action.
