Colombo (News 1st): The order of the Supreme Court to grant leave to proceed in the FR applications filed challenging the election date to be delivered tomorrow at 3.00 PM.
The consideration of the Fundamental Rights petitions challenging the dissolution of the parliament and the date of the elections conducted for the 10th day on Monday.
On Monday, the counsellors representing the petitioners concluded their reply to the submissions made by the respondents.
President's counsellor Saliya Peiris provided with the opportunity to respond to certain aspersions that were cast on the elections commission during the submissions that were made by President's counsellor Romesh De Silva as well as intervening petitioners.
Former Colombo Municipal Councillor Attorney Charitha Gunaratne filed a petition to the supreme on the 29th stating that the decision taken to cancel the election which was scheduled to take place on the 25th of April and to declare the 20th of June as the day for the election is a violation of the Elections Act.
The FR application notes at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic is spreading in the country, conducting an election puts the lives of the people in a very dangerous position.
