COLOMBO (News1st): Former opposition leader Sajith Premadasa has urged that the country's election laws should be amended before the parliamentary poll, reiterating calls to reconvene Parliament.
"If an election is to be conducted, reconvene Parliament so that a proper mechanism can be formulated to conduct the poll to ensure the safety of the people," Premadasa told reporters on Tuesday.
The former opposition leader who heads the Samagi Jana Balawegaya urged President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to reconvene Parliament in order to pass the amendments to these laws.
"As the Opposition, we are ready to lend our maximum strength and support towards such measures," Premadasa said.
He called on all lawmakers to support the amendments to facilitate conducting the poll amidst the coronavirus.
The national election commission, which has fixed the election for June 20, is awaiting a supreme court ruling to decide on whether the election can be held as scheduled.
