Democratic United National Front files petition challenging the Parliamentary Poll

Colombo (News 1st); General Secretary of the Democratic United National Front Ariyawansa Dissanayake filed a Fundamental Rights application with the Supreme Court today requesting to invalidate the decision taken to conduct the Parliamentary Election on the 20th of June.

The petitioner pointed out to the Supreme Court, the gazette by the President dissolving Parliament and the gazette by the National Elections Commission declaring 20th June as election day become invalid as Parliament cannot re-convene within three months of dissolution as stipulated by the constitution, given the present situation in the country.

The petitioner requested the Supreme Court to issue an order invalidating the decision taken to conduct the Parliamentary Election on the 20th of June.

The Chairman and members of the National Elections Commission and Director General of Health Services Dr. Anil Jasinghe were among those named as respondents in the petition.

The petitioner requested the Supreme Court to issue a writ order preventing any decision from being taken with regard to conducting the election and issuing preferential vote numbers for candidates.
