COLOMBO (News1st): The attack on journalist Arnab Goswami - the co-founder of Indian television Republic TV, on late Wednesday has been condemned by many media institutions including News 1st, which is Sri Lanka's largest news network operating across multiple, TV/radio/online, platforms in three languages.
Goswami had been attacked while travelling with his wife, and the Indian media speculated that the attack was planned by a group attached to a particular political party.
"...my car was overtaken by two people in a bike," Goswami, the editor-in-chief of the channel, told News 1st, describing the horrific ordeal.
He added that two people on a motorcycle had "tried to break the window" of his car before they "started furiously throwing liquids" at him.
Indian media reported that the two attackers have been identified and that a probe is underway to determine their political affiliation.
News 1st condemns the shameful, cowardly attack on Arnab Goswami and his wife, and considers it an attack on the freedom of free and fair reportage.
News 1st strongly believes that this sort of acts cannot go unpunished by the law, as if attacks of this nature are allowed to continue with impunity, it will result in a massive infringement on the people's right to know.
