COLOMBO (News 1st):- Members of the clergy chimed in on the issue of reconvening parliament.

Venerable Haegoda Vipassi Thero commenting on the issue said:

“Certain parties are now requesting to convene the parliament that was dissolved. We cannot believe that reconvening parliament would provide solutions to the issues that we are facing now. Convening parliament now would only impede the steps taken by the government to combat the virus. There are 225 Parliamentarians and they will begin to act based on their political agendas and that could lead to a conflict in the country. There can be programs launched against the steps taken by the government. What we need now is to strengthen the steps that have been taken by the government. So I request everyone not to spread these opinions and start interpreting it in various ways.”

Chief Registrar & Anunayake of the Sri Rohana Chapter, Mahavihara Wanshika Shyamopali Maha Nikaya, Venerable Omare Kassapa thero says;

“Was the parliament responsible for the steps that were taken thus far? So we clearly state that these statements are made to distract the government. The President shouldn’t pay heed to these statements. The people in the country are not in favour of these proposals.”

The Parish Priest of the St. Anthony’s Church in Baddegama, Rev. Fr. Damian Arsecularatne also commented on the matter;

“I have heard that millions of rupees are spent to convene parliament for a single sitting. We can spend that money to help the patients who have been affected by the Virus.”
