MP Ranjan Ramanayake was granted bail by Nugegoda Magistrate Mohamed Mihar today and the Parliamentarian was also barred from travelling overseas. Ranjan Ramanayake was arrested and remanded for interfering with the functions of judges and was released on two sureties of 500,000 rupees each. In court, the Government Analyst confirmed the voice in the phone recordings which were publicized via the media is a match to the voice of MP Ranjan Ramanayake. President's Counsel MA Sumanthiran who appeared for Ranjan Ramanayake told court, his client had not limited himself to conversations with the names of the three judges which were made public. He said the MP engaged in phone conversations with around 60 judges and had done so on behalf of the needs and rights of the people who elected him to Parliament. Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris appearing for the Attorney General strongly objected to granting bail to the accused noting the MPs actions of revealing information related to the case in Parliament using Parliamentary Privileges, posed a negative impact on the witnesses from the prosecution as well as on the investigations carried out by the prosecution. However, court decided to grant bail to the MP noting the accused was in remand for almost 06 weeks and observed releasing him on bail will not have an impact on the investigations and will not create public unrest as pointed out by the prosecution.
