COLOMBO (News 1st):- Is the new alliance of the United National Party prepared to contest the general election? In response UNP MP, Ajith P. Perera said:
"We resolved the issue concerning the elephant symbol. We are now taking the relevant legal measures to contest under the symbol of the swan. I have confidence that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya will contest the general election under the symbol of the swan. The registration process is complete. We are in the process of changing the symbol. Those who do not know about this matter, make various statements."
MP Manusha Nanayakkara said;
"Attempts are being made to create divisions over the symbol to allow the Rajapaksa's to win the majority in Parliament. They are the ones who have a deal with the government."
UNP MP, P. Harrison said;
"There is no crisis. We have decided to contest under the symbol of the swan under the leadership of Sajith Premadasa."
MP Piyasena Gamage states;
"The parties constituting our alliance do not comprise of a few members like the party represented by the symbol of a three-wheeler. We hope to form a broad alliance that comprises all opposition parties, in order to contest the upcoming election."
Meanwhile, Leader of the Tamil Progressive Alliance, Mano Ganesan said;
"It is wrong to talk about the estate community simply because they want the symbol of the elephant. Do they think that those people are brainless and uneducated? More than the urban people, they listened to us, identified what is right and wrong and voted eligible people into power. It does not matter whether the symbol is the elephant, swan, cat, or the lion. The symbol is not a problem. That is all I have to say. We do not strike deals. I am not a deal maker. I am a leader. Everything has been decided. You will receive good news next Wednesday on how we will contest the general election. Mark my words. Do not panic."
