COLOMBO (News 1st) - The possibility of Viyath Maga members contesting in the upcoming elections was questioned at a press briefing organized by the Viyath Maga organization today. Dr P.N. Meegaswatte of Viyath Maga stated that they would not contest under Viyath Maga and people are expecting wise people to come to the parliament. He added that educated people will assume membership at the parliament in the future. Journalist: From which party will those well-educated experts contest? Dr P.N. Meegaswatte responded that it should be inquired from the experts. Journalist: It's clear that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is trying to change the outlook of the Parliament. One of the concerns in the political arena is, the President's attempt to bring the members from Viyath Maga who worked with him to the Parliament. Consequently, the members of the Viyath Maga stated that they would contest representing the SLPP, however, they added that they have still not become members of the party. Will the Sri Lanka Podujana Permamuna provide nominations for members of Viyath Maga? State Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena answered the following questions raised by journalists in that regard. Rohitha Abeygunawardena, State Minister of Energy stated that usually at a General Election, they provide candidacy for all the members who represented Parliament including the parties which supported them and formed the alliance. Journalist: Will 100 people from Viyath Maga be provided with nominations? Rohitha Abeygunawardena: "There is no need to give the numbers. One district has a limited number. Take for an example, the Kalutara District, my district. Only 13 people are eligible to contest the Election. 5 people are already in Parliament. Therefore only a limited number remains. We will look into the matter of how to implement this."
