Police to tackle Kelani river extortion scam

COLOMBO(News 1st) - A Special Law Enforcement Unit has been to crack-down on criminal organizations operating from Avissawella to Wellampitiya. This unit will be supervised by the DIG in charge of the Western and Northern Division. According to the Ministry of Defence, the objective of setting up this unit is to dismantle an extortion racket where people living on the banks of the Kelani River from Avissawella to Wellampitiya are intimidated in order to sell their lands at a lower cost. The Ministry of Defence introduced a new hotline, 0713 680 001 for the general public to provide information on any form of illegal activity they witness in the area.
