COLOMBO (News 1st) - Former Minister Dr Rajitha Senaratne is further hospitalized and is currently under medical treatment. Leader of the United National Party Ranil Wickremesinghe visited the parliamentarian and inquired into his health. UNP MPs and family were also seen visiting the parliamentarian at the private hospital in Narahenpita today. Journalist: Don't you think the law is being enforced in the country now? UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake stated that it should be questioned from the CID and added that it was questionable as the police did not act on this before. UNP MP Ashoka Abeysinghe noted that MP Rajitha Senaratne would not be discharged from the hospital any soon and will have to stay at the hospital for a few more days. During a media briefing held today, MP Udaya Gammanpila made a statement regarding the former minister Dr Rajitha Senaratne staying at a private hospital while being remanded. Udaya Gammanpila stated that from the moment Rajitha Senaratna was remanded, he is under the jurisdiction of the Commissioner-General of Prisons. He added that Commissioner-General of Prisons can only keep a prisoner outside of the prison under the circumstances that he is a patient and that a patient can only be admitted to a government hospital. He added that in addition, the Minister of Justice should immediately question the Commissioner General of Prison regarding during such instance and if the Minister does not, the Prime Minister, the President and the Cabinet of Ministers should take steps to question the Minister of Justice. He went on to note that if none of these happens, as backbench MPs we will have to question the government in this regard during the next parliamentary session.
