Living fences to fight wild elephant invasions

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The State Ministry of Wildlife Resources states that they will promote living fences to prevent wild elephants from entering villages. Secretary Kumari Weerasekera said, the living fences have been implemented in several areas and it has been identified as a successful solution to prevent wild elephant invasions. She also said that the planting of flax plants to create living fences was a success. She added that the planting of flax plants will be carried out in collaboration with the Forest Department. She went on to note that plans have been made to construct living fences in the Kurunegala, Anuradhapura and Ampara districts as pilot projects.
