NBRO extends landslide warnings

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Landslide Warnings issued to 6 districts due to heavy rains were extended this afternoon. Senior Geologist Wasantha Senadheera, National Building Research Organization stated that the landslide warning has been extended till 4:00 pm tomorrow (December 22). The Divisional Secretariats in the Matale District, namely Laggala–Pallegama, Yatawatta, Naula, Wilgamuwa, Rattota and in Kandy District Ududumbara and Medadumbara, Walapane in the Nuwara Eliya District, Badulla, Bandrawela, Welimada, Hali-Ela, Uva-Paranagama, Ella, Haldummulla, Passara, Lunugala, and Haputale in the Badulla District have been issued evacuation red alerts. Level 2 warning has been issued to the Divisional Secretariats of Amban-Ganga Koralaya, Ukuwela, Pallepola and Matale in the Matale District, Hanguranketha in the Nuwara Eliya District, and Badalkumbura, Medagama and Bible in the Monaragala District. Level 1 Warning has been issued to the Divisional Secretariats of Paatha-Hewaheta in the Kandy District, Nuwara Eliya in the Nuwara Eliya District, as well as Imbulpe and Balangoda in the Ratnapura District. Moreover, the NBRO requests the general public to be vigilant if there are bunds near the houses or near the road.
