Colombo (News 1st): During an event held at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre in Colombo today (December 13), Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa expressed the following views on eradicating regional terrorism. The graduation ceremony of the Defence Service Command and Staff College was held at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre this afternoon, where 157 officers graduated. Speaking at the event Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said:
"Eventhough this is a small country, the challenges we have had faced are not that small. We have to take serious note of the fact that while there were no Indians in the 2008 Mumbai Attack, all these Easter Sunday suicide bombers were Sri Lankan. This is a threat that we'll have to contain. Not only for Sri Lanka's sake but for the well being of all other nations in the region. This year, India went on alert on at least two occasions due to the information that said terrorists from Sri Lanka were trying to enter India by boats. If we don't get on top of the situation, all neighboring countries including India, Maldives, Bangladesh, and even countries further off like Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia will be under threat. So, this new terrorist threat will have to be contained by whatever means necessary. We all know that there are various agendas at the international level operations with regard to our armed forces. There are instances where certain foreign parties objected to promotions made within our armed forces. No sovereign country will allow such interference in the internal affairs office of the armed forces."
