Over 87,000 dengue cases recorded in 2019

Colombo (News 1st): The Ministry of Health noted that 87,364 dengue cases have been recorded in the year 2019. Accordingly, there is a hike of 35,705 patients when compared to 2018. Meanwhile, 90 dengue patients have been reported dead. In 2018, 51,659 cases of dengue were reported and 44.8% of it was recorded from the Western Province. The highest number of dengue patients this year was reported from Colombo District which is 17,949. 13,718 dengue patients have been reported from the Gampaha district, while, 7,698 dengue patients have been reported from Kandy. A special program was launched to eradicate dengue in the Matale town today (December 13). Our correspondent stated that Matale Mayor Daljith Aluvihare and the staff of the Municipal Council were also present. Meanwhile, residents of the Karawanella say that there is a risk of dengue fever due to the lack of proper disposal of wastewater from the Base Hospital. They said that a 40-year-old pond was discharged to the river and its water would flow through a canal and join the Kelani River. Further, 324 dengue patients have been reported from Muttur, Kiliweddi and Sampur in the Trincomalee district. An 18-year-old girl from Thapur, also died of dengue fever last Tuesday (December 10).
