COLOMBO(News 1st)-An SLPP member of the Wanathavilluwa Pradeshiya Sabha launched a fast unto death last night, opposing the garbage disposal at the Arawakkalu sanitary landfill.
Ever since construction activities at the Arawakkalu sanitary landfill commenced, locals in the area continuously protested against it, pointing out the environmental and social issues that arise due to the landfill.
On the 8th of October this year, an explosion in a drainage tank in the Aruvakkalu garbage landfill was also reported.

It was against such a backdrop, where SLPP member of the Wanathavilluwa PS member Budhdhika Gihan launched a fast unto death last night.
Budhdhika Gihan noted that anyone can see that the tank that processes dirty water is dysfunctional. He added that the government is developing and beautifying Colombo and the rest of Sri Lanka is reduced to a garbage dump. He urged the president and the prime minister to look into this matter immediately.
Rev. Christy Fernando, Wanathavilluwa Parish stated that the government has forgotten what they promised when they came into power. He added that the conditions are way worse than it was before.
Our correspondent said, the fast that was launched by a member of the PS last evening, was announced as a fast unto death this evening.
