Vidya Rape: Appeals to be taken up fro consideration

Colombo (News 1st): The appeals filed by seven accused including Mahalingam Sashikumar alias Swiss Kumar seeking the death sentence imposed on them by a trial-at-bar at the Jaffna High Court be made void, and they be acquitted and released will be taken up for consideration on the 19th of May by the Supreme Court. The accused were sentenced to death after they were found guilty of raping and murdering Sivaloganathan Vidya. The appeals were called up in the presence of Justices Priyantha Jayawardena, P. Pathman Surasena and S. Thurairajah. A trial-at-bar at the Jaffna High Court led by then Vavuniya High Court Judge Balendran Sashi Mahendran sentenced the 07 accused to death on the 27th of September 2017.
