COLOMBO (News 1st) - Sri Lanka's Agricultural & Agrarian Insurance Board announced that more than 11,681 acres of farmlands were destroyed by floods caused by torrential rainfall. Director-General Panduka Weerasinghe speaking to News 1st said this situation led to 5718 farmers being affected with the worst damage reported from Batticaloa where almost 8,000 acres were flooded. Based on reports, compensation is to be provided to the affected paddy, maize, soybeans, chilli and big onions and potato farmers. A maximum of Rs40,000 is to be compensated for an acre of affected farmlands.
