COLOMBO (News 1st) – The United National Party expressed their views on the remarks by the President to the Hindu newspaper on the 19th amendment.
They made these remarks addressing a press conference at the Party Headquarters in Sirikotha.
UNP MP Lakshman Kiriella:
“The 19th Amendment is not something that the United National Party brought forth themselves. The whole Parliament voted for it. Minister Dinesh Gunawardena brought in amendments and they too were debated for a day.
This was brought in because there was a belief within the country that the institutions within the country need to be free of political meddling. The last election showed the importance of these Commissions.
The Government is saying that this is a hindrance. What we say is talk to us, and we will remove the parts that need to be removed. We cannot say that we will help to abolish this completely. If we see certain shortcomings we are ready to review them and make a decision as a party.”
