Investigation launched into a sexual assault in Hemmathagama

COLOMBO (News 1st):- According to Police Media Spokesperson SSP Ruwan Gunasekara an investigation has been launched into an incident where a girl who was returning in a bus after attending an SLPP rally held in Kegalle, was reportedly sexually assaulted by an individual who was traveling in the same bus. The investigation was launched following a complaint made by the victim's father. SSP Ruwan Gunasekera said the father of the girl complained that although his wife and daughter decided to attend the rally, that they had not returned home even after 11.00 pm. The father had further mentioned in the complaint that both his wife and daughter are mentally-challenged. Police investigations revealed, that the victim had been dragged by the man from the bus into a forest area in Balawathgama, Hemmathagama where the assault had take place. The Police Spokesperson further said a 23-year-old old male, a resident of Hemmathagama was arrested over the incident and the girl will be directed to a Judicial Medical Officer for a report on her condition.
