Seven arrested for illegal fishing in Punkudutivu

COLOMBO (News1 st):- Navy apprehended seven persons for engaging in illegal fishing at the Kurikadduwan jetty area in Punkudutivu. Accordingly, these persons were apprehended for engaging in fishing using unauthorized fishing nets during a raid conducted by Northern Naval Command at Kurikadduwan jetty area in Punkudutivu. A further search found 70 conch shells. The Navy also seized 04 dinghies, 04 outboard motors, and 03 unauthorized fishing nets. The suspects have been identified as residents of Kayts, Delft, Punkudutivuan areas, aged 21 to 51. The apprehended persons along with the conch shells, dinghies, outboard motors, and unauthorized fishing nets were handed over to the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Jaffna for onward action. The fish density and marine resources are subjected to needless destruction as a result of illegal fishing methods practised in Sri Lankan waters. As such the Sri Lanka Navy remains vigilant around the clock to apprehend people engaged in illegal fishing.
