COLOMBO (News 1st) - Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga is a timely requirement to direct the Sri Lanka Freedom Party on the right path. She made this statement via a post issued on her Facebook account, regarding the results of the Elpitiya election. The former President said she would not hesitate to come forward and work with the people to steer the SLFP in the right path. She believes the present party administration purposely did not inform her of any activity surrounding the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha election and a conspiracy was in place to prevent her involvement in such a process. She said it was clearly evident when the SLFP was turned-over to the SLPP on October 10th. She stressed it is paramount to protect the SLFP from the power-hungry and opportunists, and the common man needs to be given priority whilst defeating nepotism. UPFA MP Kumara Welgama also shared his thoughts on the matter and stated that it was not easy to save SLFP, however with assistance from the daughter of the late S.W.R.D.Bandaranaike they could still breathe life into the SLFP. He claimed that they have already laid the foundation for this and he would protect the SLFP and not support the SLPP. He went on to note that he would independently attempt to protect SLFP. SLFP General Secretary, Dayasiri Jayasekara noted that they too have issues with the Rajapaksa government however they should be resolved internally. He added that in 1987, Chandrika Kumaratunga left the party and formed the Mahajana Pakshaya and the Bahujana Nidahas Peramuna weakening the SLFP, and then rejoined and took the party towards victory. He added that they respect her for that however the SLFP is now with the leftist forces and they would remain to do so.
