Colombo (News 1st): The Elections Commission has temporarily suspended the appointments granted to the position of trainee project assistants at the Ministry of National Policies and Economic affairs. Appointees were greatly inconvenienced, when they arrived at the District Secretariat, as a result of the decision of the Elections Commission. 504 appointments were granted to the Ampara District.
The Elections Commission in its letter to the District Secretary, informing him of the suspension, stated that many complaints had been lodged over the appointments. The letter had also informed the district secretary that as such appointments were made at a time when elections have been announced are illegal; the appointments will be suspended until November 16th.
Meanwhile, a group whose appointments were suspended in the Kandy district expressed their opposition opposite the District Secretariat.
Minister Lakshman Kiriella who arrived at the location noted that they do not have time to discuss this with the Elections Commissioner, because the election will be held within a month. He added that it will be held on the 16th and after that these appointments will be valid; nobody can invalidate them.
