Colombo (News 1st): Addressing a gathering of medical students and their parents who were admitted to the Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, President Maithripala Sirisena said his policy is to have state and private universities for all subject areas. President said the quality of education in the state universities should be maintained.
The President further stated that foreign exchange of Rs. 8 billion is going out of the country for children studying overseas. The President pointed out that the competition for education cannot be hindered and the education system should be developed to overcome this challenge. He also added over the past few years, some have led university students to fulfil their narrow political aspirations, but he was committed to protect those students and solve their problems.
The head of state said that it was a tragedy as some doctors and engineers leave the country before they get their 1st appointment. The President explained the importance of educating the students about their duties and responsibilities towards the country.
