Majority requests Premadasa as presidential candidate: Ajith P. Perera

Colombo (News 1st): Non-Cabinet Minister Ajith P. Perera is in the forefront of the majority of those who say that Sajith Premadasa should be the presidential candidate of the proposed UNP-led coalition. Speaking to reporters, he noted that the UNP presidential candidate will not be chosen via conspiracies planned in A/C rooms or through deals as Sajith Premadasa will come forward as the UNP presidential candidate with the blessings of the people and the support of the party activists and majority of MPs. He added that some are making attempts to prevent this from happening, however, he stressed that no conspiracy can prevent this democratic process as they have the people's power, the power of the supporters and the power of Parliamentary Group. He responsibly stated that they have the power of the UNP Working Committee as well. The Non-Cabinet Minister noted that they must respect the Prime Minister as he protected the party during tough times. However, he added that if they are to secure a victory at the Presidential Election, it is only Sajith Premadasa who can provide fresh leadership for that because it is what the country believes in. He said the party supporters, local government members, provincial councillors and MPs believe the same. Therefore, he went on to note that they need to give him that opportunity and all the parties who have joined with them have agreed to support Sajith Premadasa.
