Colombo (News 1st): An emergency meeting between the Sri Lanka Podu Jana Peramuna and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party took place this evening (September 06) at the Opposition Leader's Office in two stages. Representing the SLFP in the first stage, were the General Secretary of the party, Dayasiri Jayasekara, and Mahinda Amaraweera. Professor G.L. Peiris, Basil Rajapaksa, and Dallas Alahapperuma represented the SLPP in the first stage of the meeting. Thereafter another round of discussions started with the attendance of the Presidential Candidate of the SLPP, Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Speaking to the media, the General Secretary of the UPFA Mahinda Amaraweera noted that there is clear progress in their discussions. He added that as the SLFP, they are hoping to continue the discussions until they come to an agreement. He said they will unite for a campaign that will develop and protect Sri Lanka while safeguarding the identity of the SLFP. When questioned if the President will contest as the Presidential Candidate, he noted that the president will not and the candidate will be appointed based on the content of the letter sent by them. He said if the discussions end up in a negative manner, the country and the SLFP supporters should know they have an alternative up their sleeve. He went onto note that there is still more time as the nominations have not been called. He added that President Maithripala Sirisena did everything in 40 odd days, therefore, they have ample time. SLPP Presidential Candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa noted that he believes that the SLFP will support him. He noted that several requests were made and that they will reach a decision following a discussion with their party. He confirmed that these meetings will be held continuously.
