COLOMBO (News 1st):- Chairman of the Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya said that the provincial council elections cannot be held prior to the Presidential elections. Attending a radio program on Sirasa FM, the Chairman said that he did not receive the relevant reports to inquire into the view of the Supreme Court. When he was questioned by the host of the program, on the measures that the commission will have to take if the court decides or recommends that the provincial council elections should be held, the Chairman said that having the election is not practical, because the PC elections need 50 days and that even if 50 days are counted from today, that the election dates will go beyond October 20th. He further said, that after that they would need a minimum of a week to finish all the work and then move to a presidential election which is inconvenient and is also too late. However, Deshapriya said that if the court issues a verdict, that they will have to consider it all or if at all request the Supreme Court to give them time to hold the Provincial Council elections after the Presidential elections.   https://youtu.be/U8XK60YcQe8
